What's all the fuss with those sneaker proxies??

I am old school, we had proxies back in my days, socks5 usually, we used proxifier or before that some other tool (forgot the name).
What's all this about sneaker proxies, I first thought it was just some technical term I didn't know, but it turns out there is some hype getting the newest sneaker releases and that is what all these services are focusing on?
