Yesterday, my group had to survive an avalanche, and my DM used that quick time event-inspired mechanic, where each player selects a skill, describes how they use it to solve the problem, then roll against the event's DC, with each person needing to get a certain ammount of successes (2, this time around) before they accumulate too many failures (3 failures and you're out).
It was really cool, and I had this moment where I though "Hmm... I wouldn't mind if combat was like this as well". Really liked how those same characters, who were just spamming attack an hour prior, were now using their superhuman intellect to calculate the trajectory of the rocks, pirouetting through the whole avalanche or leaning against the clifface to use their shields like and improvised tent.
What are some systems out there where you don't have designated "Attack" and "Defense" stats, and must relly on your skills even in combat?
