Gooddamn did this movie age well.
It obviously has a lot of themings that Miyazaki loves to throw in (respect the environment, anti war). But I think this movie walked so movies like princess mononoke could run. But starters.
1.) Passes the Bechdel test with flying colors. Not only is their a female lead but there isn't a love interest. And the female lead though is told to be careful is not told that she isn't capable. Keep in mind this movie came out in 1984. 5 years before The little mermaid was released.
2.) Story beats feel good. For a movie that is almost two hours long it does drag at times. But the story feels fleshed out enough. Especially for a studio ghibli movie.
3.) Animation holds up. Once again for a movie made in 84 the hand drawn animation looks great. Obviously not as good as modern but that's what happens when there is almost a 40 year gap in technology.
Overall this movie get 4.5 starts and is going on my 'film school' list. I don't think it's a must watch as Miyazaki has better movies down the line but I do think it's a good start for people wanting to get into foreign animation.
