Just like time does not stand still for any of us, it also does not do that for software design. We have used Computer Aided Design (CAD) for many years, but have also seen how it has changed as technology advances.

So, as a person who uses or has used CAD, what do you think about the future of CAD? Chances are that you have seen other applications come and go, while others have remained and even made CAD better. But have you seen the impact of MBD, MBE, PMI, and AI?

Do you even know what these are? Are they going to change CAD in any way? Do they even have any impact today? Let us look into the exciting future of CAD with MBD, MBE, PMI, and AI.

What are MBD, MBE, PMI, and AI?

MBD (Model-Based Definition)

MBD (Model-Based Definition) can be defined as an annotated model of 3D where you can get all the information that you need to inspect and manufacture a product.

When you are implementing MBD in CAD, you are supposed to capture the surface finishes, symbols, notes, tolerances, and dimensions. You need all the information that can help you define the products and components in your models.

MBE (Model-Based Enterprise)

MBE (Model-Based Enterprise), on the other hand, is an enterprise. A product development enterprise that has extended MBD to manufacturing from just engineering and achieved faster time to market, lower costs, and process efficiency in the process is known as MBE.

If you want to get all the advantages of MBD, you should optimize your MBE environment to ensure that it can use 3D datasets throughout the supply chain and enterprise.

PMI (Product and Manufacturing Information)

PMI (Product and Manufacturing Information) helps designers by eliminating the need for them to create any drawings and instead provides non-generic attributes for their 3D CAD designs used in product manufacturing.

When starting product development, you are supposed to come up with a digital blueprint that shows your design intent. This is referred to as PMI. In other words, PMI is the format in which all your engineering information will be delivered.

AI (Artificial Intelligence)

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is the ability of software-coded heuristics to simulate human intelligence.

In other words, a program that is controlled by a computer is able to perform tasks that are associated with intelligent human beings. It has changed every other industry, including how developers create mobile apps. Even if you are not an engineer or designer, you use AI in so many ways every day.

But how are these four changing Computer-Aided Design (CAD)? Should you be looking forward to the future of CAD because of what they are doing?

The Future of CAD

Well, the truth is that you should be ready for an exciting future in CAD. If you have been in this industry for a long time, you can admit that many technologies have come and gone, but some have been very resilient and changed how you do things.

Initially, you might have had to spend a lot of time fixing your CAD models, something that might have affected your design efforts. At the time, the conditions you had for CAD models could have been roadblocks to your desire to get to a point of design reuse. Do not even be surprised to find some designers still struggling with this.

However, the future looks exciting. Already, we have seen evolving solutions that allow you to author design intent and product definition. All these are obtained from your CAD models. This is where MBD comes in. We are still going to see more advancements making this even better.

MBE, on the other hand, is seen as a foundational design element that has seen designers reap the benefits of usable, complete, and good CAD models. Imagine what the future of CAD will look like when we have more advancements in MBE and MBD!

We cannot forget what AI (Artificial Intelligence) is doing to CAD. This is actually where the evolution is. As a designer or engineer, chances are that you have already seen how AI has changed how you work, especially in the design process.

In the next few years, your work will not only be faster but also more efficient. This will ensure that you are getting better results in every stage of the design process. You will even have AI naturally making suggestions when using CAD. These suggestions will be very close to what you would have designed on your own.

The Future is Bright

Do not worry about some of these advancements taking over your jobs as designers or engineers. Instead, look at them as advancements that are supposed to make you better at what you do. The future of CAD is exciting, so look forward to creating better designs.
