I have to say that many advice you get for climbing the ladder won't help lower rated players at all.
First of all you should know that
You get good at League of Legends mainly by playing the game a lot
With that in mind don't expect to improve your skills drastically over night. Of course there are few things that can help you improve faster, and I will try to help you do that.
If you want to climb the ladder and can't, there are two main reasons why your skills are not good enough:
You lack mechanics and/or game knowledge or Spacebar
With this guide I will tell you what you can do to improve faster and therefore climb the ladder faster.
Improve your general- and champ mechanics.
This means:
First you should start improving your accuracy with the mouse (there are some games that help, OSU for example) This will help you to actually click on the things you want to click on. It's important to do everything you do on your computer with the same mouse settings(mouse speed, dpi, acceleration, etc.) so you actually get used to the speed and behaviour of the mouse
Secondly you have to start focusing on your champ mechanics. That means stop playing 10+ different champions in ranked. Focus on a set of selected champions, it really doesnt matter what champs. If you play a champ often, you learn combos, damage output and power of that champion in different matchups. This is why one trick ponies can climb the ladder so well, they know their champ better than the opponents know theirs, and therefore are able to outplay them even in bad matchups. In lower elo, counter picking is not important at all and even in higher ratings you can win bad matchups if you know your champ well enough.
Honestly, focusing on 3 different champs is enough to start off and more than enough to climb up to higher diamond divisions.
People really underestimate how important it is to focus on a smaller championpool.
Improve your game knowledge
There are a few things that you can do purely on your own to improve your game knowledge.
Know every champions
This includes knowing the general things about every champions, like spells, estimated range and damage, cc, roughly cooldowns)
You learn a lot of these things by playing or playing against the champions but you can also look up specific stuff on the league of legends wiki
For example: In champselect you see you are up against Renekton. While in loading screen you can open up the wiki page for him (http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Renekton
You can see his q,w,e do physical damage and all have high cooldowns
q and w on around 10 seconds
and e on lv1 around 20 seconds
That means armor will help you block some of his damage and further because his cooldowns are so high if he uses one or two of those for farming, you can trade damage with him because he wont be able to use those against you.
You can of course watch streams and read/watch guides.
But always think about what the streamers/players/casters are saying and especially why they are saying it.
You can get a replay program and watch your own games to see what you did wrong, because when you are watching at it without actually playing you can realize things, that you probably didnt realize while ingame.
ALWAYS focus on the mistake you do first, not your teammates. You want to learn from your mistakes and not keeping making them and then blaming your team for also doing mistakes. Don't blame your team, always blame yourself, with that mindset improving will be much much much much easier.
Okay guys, that's it for my little guide. It is based on my opinion and my experience with lower elo players, so some of you might disagree in some points and that's totally okay. Of course you can also leave your own experiences or advice in a reply.
I hope i could help a few of you and tell you something you didn't knew or consider before.
And remember, I said it in the beginning and I'll say it again in the end:
You get good by playing a lot and getting experience, so don't be dissappointed if you don't see improvement instantly, if you keep a good mindset you will improve for sure.
