Creepy Saw 9 IMAX poster turns police handcuffs into a deadly spiral. Saw was a game-changing horror franchise in the 2010s, but ran out of steam when the decade turned over. Now veteran Saw series director Darren Lynn Bousman is back for a reboot that sees a new killer following in original series bad guy Jigsaw’s gruesome footsteps.
It was actually somewhat surprising when news first broke that Saw was coming back, given the way the franchise petered out with 2017’s Jigsaw. Even more surprising was the news that Chris Rock had joined the movie as the lead actor. Unfortunately COVID-related delays forced the finished film to be pushed back all the way to 2021. Now Spiral: From the Book of Saw is nearly ready for release, and teasers for the new horror excursion have been coming hot and heavy, including a Saw 9 trailer that provided plenty of clues about the new movie’s story and the new killer’s motivations.

The newest piece of Spiral-related promo material may not be as revealing as some others but it does offer an image that neatly sums up what the new movie is about. See the freshly released Spiral IMAX poster in the space below (via Bloody Disgusting):
The above poster indeed has plenty of significance to the plot of Spiral: From the Book of Saw. Obviously, it’s a reference to Rock’s character being a cop. But there’s also the nature of the new movie’s antagonist, a Jigsaw copycat who is targeting very specific individuals to torture and kill. And Jigsaw’s targets happen to be cops, or specifically, dirty cops as teased by Rock himself. Rock’s own character finds himself investigating the new Jigsaw’s crimes, and eventually learns that everything connects back to his own ex-cop father, played by Samuel L. Jackson.
Obviously there has been a lot of real world discussion in recent months about the actions of police in certain high-profile cases. It’s natural to conclude therefore that Spiral: From the Book of Saw, with its plot about a killer targeting dirty cops, is set to be a little more thematically meaty than the original Saw movies. And in fact the new IMAX poster above seems to somewhat reinforce the idea that the movie is trying to be more than just a horror film.
The older Saw movies of course were all about getting down to torture-porn business, and offered no particular slant on current events. These days though, horror movies are more and more becoming vehicles for social justice messages. It remains to be seen how hard Saw 9 leans into whatever message it may have about the conduct of the police. But if the movie delivers enough twists and turns, and creepiness and gore, horror fans will likely be satisfied.
