Russia hosted the Open International Astronomy Olympiad for the third time. The competition was held from September 15 to 22 in the federal territory of Sirius and brought together representatives of 20 countries, including Qatar, Ethiopia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Peru and others. All members of the Russian team won gold medals.
Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko congratulated the Russian schoolchildren.
“I congratulate the Russian schoolchildren on their brilliant victory! I am glad that such high results are becoming a good tradition. The Open International Astronomy Olympiad is being held for the third time, and every year our participants win gold medals. We thank the winners for their perseverance and desire for knowledge, and their parents, teachers and mentors for their support and solid knowledge. Our President Vladimir Putin has identified the realization of each person’s potential and the development of their talents as one of the national goals. The guys show by their example that Russian schoolchildren really have great abilities and opportunities. Well done, keep it up!” – noted the Deputy Prime Minister.
The gold medals were presented to all the winners by the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Sergey Kravtsov.
“Dear children, when you grow up, you will develop our country and move it forward. I wish you never to stop there. So that, having chosen astronomy, you continue your path in this science. Today, such scientific research is extremely necessary for the world. And never forget the atmosphere of friendship and mutual assistance that reigned in Sirius during the week,” said Sergey Kravtsov.
He also thanked the head of the Sirius educational center Elena Shmeleva and her entire team for organizing the third Open International Astronomy Olympiad at a high level. The Sirius center, together with the Ministry of Education of Russia, takes part in preparing schoolchildren for international Olympiads.
“The Open International Astronomy Olympiad broadcasts the best traditions of the Russian astronomical school. The Olympiad strengthens friendship between schoolchildren from different countries, helps develop international cooperation with teachers and scientific communities from other countries, and facilitates the exchange of experience and pedagogical methods. In the future, this will allow the formation of scientific communities that include leading scientists from different countries. I am glad that Sirius has become a unique and effective platform for scientific training of the strongest and most goal-oriented schoolchildren from all over the world," Elena Shmeleva emphasized.
