A Romanian member of the cyber group NetWalker was sentenced this week to 20 years in prison in the United States after pleading guilty to cyberattacks. Daniel Cristian Julea, 31, was extradited from Romania after his arrest in July 2023. On June 20, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit computer fraud and wire fraud in federal court in Florida.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Hulea admitted to making up to $21.5 million from NetWalker ransomware attacks. The group has been widely known for attacks on hospitals and healthcare facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as numerous attacks on companies, municipalities, schools, and other organizations.
As part of the plea agreement, Hulea agreed to confiscate $21.5 million and a resort in Bali purchased with money earned through the attacks. He is also required to pay additional fines and compensations in the amount of $15 million.
According to the case file, Hulea was a member of a group of European cybercriminals who used various platforms to carry out ransomware attacks. Last year, the alleged developers of tools used by NetWalker members were arrested in Poland. As part of the deal, Juléa pledged to help prosecute other cybercriminals.
Juléa was the latest member of NetWalker to receive a guilty verdict and a long sentence. In January 2021, the FBI and the US Department of Justice conducted a coordinated operation to eliminate the group's activities, confiscating cryptocurrency and indicting Canadian https://xss.is/threads/62673/.
U.S. investigators said the list of victims of the NetWalker group could exceed 1,500 organizations, although only 115 victims filed complaints with the police. Prosecutors estimate that NetWalker is responsible for more than 5,000 bitcoins in extortion payments, which stands at around $146.6 million to date.
