The band that originated the RHCP came in 1979, when the members still attended Fairfax High School, located in Hollywood. At 15 years old, teenagers school friends, Michael Balzary, Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons, joined his musical predilections and formed the band Anthym. Anthony Kiedis was a big fan of this band and was part of California musicians circle. In 1981, Flea leaves Anthym and becomes part of the Fear, punk rock band located in LA But the Anthym, now under the name of What Is This ?, wins Kiedis as a vocalist and continues with Hillel and Irons.
After several mergers, splits and confusion between circuit bands, arises in 1983, the original lineup of the Red Hot (Kiedis, Irons, Flea and Hillel). At that time, the group's name was Miraculousy Majestic Masters of Mayhem. The band actually came from a joke between the four friends, who decided to appear in a Los Angeles club. However, members felt a very great synergy and what was supposed to be a joke, turned into a "serious" project.
Then, dubbed the group Red Hot Chili Peppers and composed two songs "Out in LA" and "Get Up and Jump". By mixing different rhythms like rock and funk, they became well known in Los Angeles, besides counting on one of the strangest names for bands in rock history. Anthony Kiedis, in one of his walks numb the street, said he saw the phrase "RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS" flashing a psychedelic bush pepper format. Another version says that the boys loved Mexican food, where it comes from the word "chili" which was added to the name of the band of Louis Armstrong support, "Red Hot Peppers", which Flea was a fan.
In 1988, Hillel Slovak died of a drug overdose and was replaced by John Frusciante. But this was not the only change in the line-up. Because of side projects, the group underwent more than five changes of members. Among the musicians are representative names to rock. Arik Marshall, Jesse Tobias, Josh Klinghoffer, Cliff Martinez, Chad Smith, DH Peligro and Dave Navarro, former guitarist of the band Jane's Addiction, passed by the group, which currently (2011) has Anthony Kiedis, Michael "Flea" Balzary, Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer.
