Hello everyone, in this simple guide I will explain how to create a VHS effect to a photo, in order to give it a retro look, very useful in case you manage a blog or a site in which much use is the 80s aesthetic / 90. First of all, the following requirements must be met: 1) A version of Photoshop installed on the PC, it is not important what this version is, since the steps of the following guide are very basic and do not require particular functions implemented only in the latest versions. 2) A retro font installed on the PC, I'm not sure I can post the links on Stertix nor even mention them, but just think of having to orientate on the characters used in the old video / cameras to indicate the date and time
We start the guide by opening our version of Photoshop, I use the CC version 2017 but, as already said before, any version is accepted. We import the image, thus finding ourselves faced with a situation similar to the following:
Then, unlock the background layer by double clicking on it and clicking "OK", and then duplicate it twice, so you have a total of three levels.
We open the merge options of both new levels and deselect a color between R, G and B in one of the levels, and the other two in the other layer. (Example: Deselect R in the "Layer 0 Copy" layer, then deselect G and B in the "Layer 0 Copy 2" layer. We leave the layer "Layer 0" intact.
We will find ourselves in a situation identical to the initial one, but moving one of the modified levels we will notice a flickering based on the chosen colors. Place them at your convenience, until you get the result you want.
To amplify the retro effect, apply a pre-produced effect downloaded from google on the photo by searching for "VHS Overlay", or you can create it by lowering the overall brightness of the photo and creating small random white rectangles scattered throughout the image. After this procedure, the image will look like this:
The procedure is almost complete. At your convenience, you can enrich the image glitch by removing or moving selections from one of the extra layers, selecting them with the "Selection" tool and deleting them with the Delete key, or by moving them with the mouse. Then, use the font downloaded from the web to stamp a date on the image and you will have completely transformed your image.
