What went wrong?
I was connected and downloading copyrighted data (games) from a P2P network through a bittorrent client.
This torrent had trackers that were in cahoots with the copyright holder of the files.
I didn't use a VPN for most of my P2P transfers which was a fault on behalf of my ignorance.
So I received a phone call from my ISP regarding a letter that's currently in transit to my house.
This letter should contain information regarding what will happen next regarding any lawsuits and possible internet service termination/throttling.
The ISP confirmed that this was the 1st recorded incident with my account regarding copyright infringement so they're not likely to terminate my internet service.
My concern is whether or not the copyright holder of the files I was downloading are going to sue me for copyright infringement.
What does this have to do with your files?
So far I have gone into damage control by lowering my footprint regarding copyright infringements.
I'm being purposefully vague regarding what files I've downloaded and the results of this incident for safety purposes.
In the meantime I'll be enforcing encryption on my storage devices and on any files I'll be sharing from hereon.
In the case of my files on Mega, I'll be removing them as well since they still have a copy of the decryption keys for when law enforcement comes knocking at their door.
I'll be resorting to something a bit more substantial (something more private).
So you should delete those threads since they're no longer offering what they advertise.
I can't remove/delete the threads, but I can list off the threads by URL which are affected by this incident:
What will you do now?
All I can do regarding this copyright infringement issue is wait for the copyright holder to make a decision regarding whether or not to throw a lawsuit my way.
What about your files?
That's something I'll be thinking about, and I'll make a followup edit of this thread when I figure out a solid method.
