Is taking picking main hero or counter picking better ?

In a ranked game is it better to have your main hero even if there is a counter at enemy team,
Or is it better to have enemys counter even it is not your main hero.
If they are nearly equal should we choose our main whic is not counter for enemy or the enemy is not your counter or even it is not your main picking enemys counter...
