Is Amazon checking/cracking still relevant?

I was wondering, are amazon checkers/crackers still a relevant topic or has the hype died down? I've seen several amazon crackers start up, get hyped and disappear in a short period of time, a sad conclusion of inexperienced and/or unmotivated programmers.
I wanted to create one of my own to sell on several message boards to help me pay my student bills, but if there is no interest in these anymore, might as well save myself some time and money.
