The U.S. Department of Justice has charged six people with fraudulently bilking the government over contracts to supply IT products and services to the nation. The victims include the Department of Defense and several intelligence agencies.
The first group of defendants, led by Victor Marquez of Maryland, allegedly used insider information to win contracts on non-competitive terms. This allowed Marquez’s company to bid on predetermined, artificially low prices, which guaranteed victory. Marquez faces fraud and conspiracy charges and faces up to 70 years in prison. His co-conspirators are also charged with similar crimes.
The lead defendant in the second group is Bril L. Madison Jr., who sold more than $9 million worth of IT products to his employer and government agencies through shell companies over several years. Madison is believed to have used some of the money to buy a yacht and a Lamborghini Huracan. If convicted, authorities intend to confiscate those assets. Madison Jr. faces charges of conspiracy, bribery and money laundering and could face up to 185 years in prison.
