Hi, being a professional graphics designer and animator for the past 4 yrs as a freelance designer and just starting on cracked during this lockdown, I have worked for the biggest names online, most of work can be see on front page ads of cracked and other forums, in my career as a designer I have encountered many design clients who are running a highly profitable business and want a professional level HQ design for 3-4$ and Rep+.
In no way I disregard them, but this post is made to request them to adopt a better approach towards designers and creatives.
As 2-3$ will not pay for the softwares we use. Rep+ will not pay our bills.
"Cheap is not HQ, and HQ isn't cheap"
I have been fortunate enough to work with the biggest clients on cracked and other forums. I have provided value to their business for the price they've offered me.
I have received a positive feedback from them to how my designs have increased the conversion rate of first time visitors to permanent customers.
I have worked with alot of clients who pay less but do respect designers and ask for designs based on their pricing.
I have worked for the owners here on cracked and other forums. I love working with them because they understand the creative process and how things are designed. These clients not only provide us a information to work with, but they team up with us and help make that Information into a fully working and pleasant design.
Some people think that designing is an easy job, we designers copy and paste the information you give us and add colours to the background and an image. No Sir, that's not how designing works. We designers have worked our way learning these softwares and learning design principles to make your designs look pleasing to the eyes of your customers. We work to create value and identity for your business.
I request Design Clients to atleast once see what the creative process looks like, how much time and effort it takes to make something. How many revisions, how many save files we create, how many hours we put into your design work.
And I know no multimillionaire business owners look for designers on cracked but still charging 2-3$ for a logo is just overworking yourself. To speak for myself I charge 100$ (Starting price) for a logo design, which is still a very low price for a logo, many designers charge even 500$ for a logo as simple as just text.
Also to all the designers here on cracked who work for a low price starting for 5-10$.
I don't ask them to start charging a higher price, but I do request them to not overwork for a low paying client. Rather you can make a pricing plan and include number of revisions for their design and set a rate per extra revision.
Yes it's true that if you are just starting out as a designer you should charge less and maybe even work for free. But slowly and slowly as you build your clients and a portfolio you can start charging more as your designs would now work as benchmark for these businesses. You will now add value to these businesses. I also request you to choose smart clients who will help you with any information during the design process and would prove an asset for you in the long run.
"A bad design may (or may not) become the reason for a drop in the value of your business, but a good and thought-out design will definitely add value to your business"
This post is not a rant, but a request to design recruiters to adopt a better approach towards designers, and to designers to not drain themselves by overworking.
I speak for myself and would welcome anyone who agrees with my ideology.
I request you to share this as much as possible for the betterment of the design community and overall in general.
Regards
