How To Win More SoloQueue?
Take Responsbility
I recently got the chance to interview TSM Wildturtle (Summoner Name: Turtle the Cat), the NA Solo Queue King. He was ranked #1 Challenger Season 3 and he finished Season 4 with the #1 ranking as well. Turtle shared many solo queue insights with me, which I will release as a video in a week or so to prepare Summoners for S5 Ranked. During the interview, one striking insight that Turtle shared was that most players fail to reflect on their performances because they blame their losses on unlucky matchmaking. I strongly agree with Turtle that adjusting your attitude to take on full responsibility of every game you play is a very important part of becoming a better player.
Improving Begins With Self-Reflection
I’ve been playing LoL since Season 1 and finished the season with an Elo of 1410, which wasn’t even enough to get me the Victorious Jarvan skin. In Season 2, I adjusted my attitude with the mindset that “if top players can easily break through elo hell, then I can too. I just need to become betterâ€. The journey, on which I will share more details later, ended with me reaching 2200 Elo in Season 2, which is close to Diamond V in the current ranking system. There were many little things that I did to improve my gameplay in Season 2, but the most effective strategy was that I began treating League of Legends ranked like it’s PvE. I only cared about my own actions and performances. I wasn’t completely invulnerable to other player’s behavior, after all I am still human, but I focused mostly on my own performance and improved through that.
Changing Mentality
Instead of having the mentality of 'my teammates are feeders'; try treating your feeding teammates like an ankle weight and try to carry harder. Even in the games where you have an AFK, you should still aim to get the most out of your time, which means you can still try hard during the laning phase. You may not win the game but if you learned something during the laning phase, then it’s well worth it. It’s important to not put so much emotional distress on LP loss because if you are truly good, you will earn it back and gain more. Gaining LP on consecutive games when you know you got carried is like trying to earn your income through gambling.
Use Perspectives
With years of solo queue experience, I can assure you that MOST solo queue players are trying their best. For most gamers losing is not fun, thus when your mid laner is getting owned, he is most likely not intentionally feeding. And in this situation, the last thing you want to do is to pour more oil into the fire. Why spend energy and time taunting your own teammate? You may feel better but it won’t earn you LP on the long run and it gives you an excuse for losing.
May The Odds Be In Your Favor
The best way to think solo queue is if your enemy top laner is able to carry the enemy team to victory, then you should reflect with the mindset of what could I have done to carry my team even harder. If you were 0-0 in lane, you should reflect on how you could’ve been 3-0 or out-farmed your enemy. If you truly want to become better, then start focusing on spending time to reflect each game on how you could’ve done better. If you won lane and lost game, reflect on opportunities where you could’ve snowballed your advantage. Maybe you should’ve roamed or joined teamfights, or maybe you should’ve split pushed. Your decisions and attitude will determine your rankings. Most of the challenger/master players in Season 4 had an average win rate of 58%, which means they still lost 4 games for every 10 games they played. It’s those few key victories that will get you through the promotions.
Keep hustling summoners.
