How safe is refunding?

Ive been wanting some stuff refunded but am a bit concerned on how safe getting your stuff refunded on Amazon really is. I noticed that most of the top refunders accounts are around a year old. Do things happen and refunders just drop off and make a new account and not give support to existing or older customers? First thing that stuck out to me when I went to top refunders page is that their account age is all pretty recent within the last year or so. I remembered I used to refund stuff maybe 3-5 years ago so I figured these refunders would have a much more aged account. Any thoughts?
