I have been checking out a number of fantasy campaigns settings in different game systems that are based in near-realist historical settings: Saga of the Icelanders, Wolves of God, Historica Arcanum: City of the Crescent (and the Crusades expansion coming out for 5e), Blood and Honor or Sengoku (for Japan) the Midderlands and Great Lunden. I'm wondering if there are a lot of these that are out there, and if it's something that people are interested in.
I was running a Viking-themed campaign and kicking myself that I didn't just use the actual map of Scandinavia and Norse mythology, wondering if this is something that other people did often. As I found historical maps and other elements and just realised that it would take enormous resources to try to come close to some of the stuff that could just be found online and in historical documents. For example, I've started to use translated passage from actual Norse epic poetry in game rather than invent my own from scratch. The coast of Norway, for example, looks so ripe for re-imagining, like the Midderlands and Great Lunden setting.
