Guide to cryptocurrency?

Hey everyone, I've never really had much interest in cryptocurrencies as I've been getting by with paypal. However, I'm starting to notice more and more people (especially on this site) accepting only BTC as a form of payment for products/services and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice for a beginner stepping into the world of cryptocurrency. I've tried paying in BTC in the past but the amount of time it took for me to set up a wallet and conversion rate really turned me off from every using it again.
