Little introduction before the tutorial: I was writing a way more detailed tutorial but firefox crashed so fuck that shit I have missed some details
In this tutorial I'll explain how to choose the right vpn if you care about your online privacy and/or your online security
What you MUST avoid:
Why the people use a vpn? To hide all their online activities from data miners, ISPs and law enforcement. But what is the point of using a vpn if it logs more data than your ISP and will sell them to data miners/givethem to lw enforcement on reques? That's why you MUST avoid all the vpn that logs any data activity.
Absolutely avoid all the FREE vpn. How do you think they'll pay their servers? They'll sell your data and obtain financial help from law enforcement.
You need to avoid all the vpn that are registered under the jurisdiction of 5 eyes (for more info read here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes ) because they NEED to keep logs to follow the law. Also avoid all the vpn based on the 14 eyes (more info here https://restoreprivacy.com/5-eyes-9-eyes-14-eyes/ ) for a better security.
WARNING: this doesn't mean that you can't use servers in those country. But the vpn must have his legal office in a country that isn't listed here.
To check under what jurisdiction a vpn is registered go on their official site and check a page named "About us" or something like that
What you should look for when searching a vpn:
You need to search for a 0 logs VPN. First when you look for a vpn always check under what jurisdiction is registered and search on internet about IT related laws in this country, if is a country interested in privacy rights and especially if it's in bad relationships with USA. The best option are those third world country in bad relationships with USA because they don't have well defined laws nor they collaborate with USA and similar countries (that are the most interested in IT crimes). the United Arab Emirates or some african country are a really good choice. Also a nice choice is using a VPN hosted by someone anonymous (that you obviously need to trust, for example a well known member of some forum etc...) that haven't registered the vpn. So all the request from law enforcement will be ignored/answered with a "No".
Also the really good providers will accept to screenshare the servers so you can just contact the support and ask them to connect to a random server of their vpn and screenshare to show you the logs. If they are all 0 or /dev/null and so on the vpn is probably safe to use
To find those information check pages "About us" "Privacy policy" and similar. Also is really important to check if the vpn have a warrant canary
What is Warrant Canary?
In this page the vpn provider keep updating the situation of their server and of his service. In case the servers or his service will be compromised by law enforcement to obtain informations a co-worker based on a foreign country will update the canary page with the situation and eventual warning to stop using the service. Also they report here eventual request from law enforcement and their answers
My VPN suggestions and why NordVPN is sketchy:
those are just personal suggestions based on my ideas and research. Always do your own research and think with your mind before choosing what vpn you should use.
1. DoubleVPN - https://doublevpn.com
I really appreciate this vpn first because I trust the owner. But also is way better than any other vpn on the market for the tunnel that offers (double, triple etc...) and especially because it uses modified parameters and forbid back-ping. In this way is nearly impossible for the site to detect that you are using a vpn unless the IP is blacklisted
2. SecureVPN - https://securevpn.to
I think this is a really good choice. way cheaper than doublevpn and they used to screenshare without problem the servers
probably also RSocks VPN is decent but I have never did any research about it so dunno.
Why NordVPN isn't here?
Probably all of you already heard about NordVPN, it's the most famous no logs provider around. It isn't included here because lately it's becaming really sketchy and I'm not sure if it can be trusted. known trouble:
They are connected to a data mining company (Tesonet). More info here https://torrentfreak.com/nordvpn-responds-to-privacy-sensitive-allegations-180830/
they answered to this accusations but since I ain't sure how much I can trust them anymore I'll just link their answers here
Second thing is that they used (on their site) a data mining script that collected every single keystroke and mouse movement of the users
Third thing is that their client was vulnerable to a privilege escalation, more info here https://threatpost.com/protonvpn-nordvpn-flaws-open-door-to-privilege-escalation/137332/
Also as far as I know they sadly refused to screenshare to normal customer their servers
Little tips and suggestions for whoever is concerned about serious trouble with law:
Always use OpenVPn client, never use the client made by a vpn provider.
Using OpenVPN you are exposed to some leaks like DNS leak. Set your own DNS to no logs one
Remember to search an open source third party killswitch program. Or use a firewall and block all the request not made using the vpn.
Remember that a vpn isn't keeping you 100% anonymous, they'll find you anyway (Correlation attack, viruses, dox and more). If you want to be really anonymous you should search on google for some more detailed tutorials
This is the end of the tutorial. Please don't be retarded and don't leech it, I wasted over an hour to write this for everyone that really care about his privacy.
If this type of content is appreciated maybe I'll post more advanced tutorials on online security. let me know in the comment
