Dealing with summer heat

After moving to a new house I've noticed that the heat is unbearable in the summer. The high humidity makes it even worse, so I'm spending my days being sweaty and miserable. I've been thinking about splurging on an air conditioner, but choosing the correct one and installing it seems like a daunting task. Any tips?
