Sverdlovsk police detained a group operating under the guise of the BlaBlaCar website.
According to Valery Gorelykh, head of the press service of the regional garrison of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, six residents of Lesnoy as part of an organized group acted under the pretext of providing transportation services on the BlaBlaCar travel companion website. During the searches, cell phones, hard drives, system units, bank cards and a laptop used to deceive citizens were found and seized.
During interrogation, the defendants confessed, assuring that they were ready to compensate for the material damage caused to people. Before the trial, two suspects were remanded in custody, and the rest were given a written undertaking not to leave and proper behavior. All six have no previous convictions and are not officially employed.
"The organizer of the group administered an automated application (bot) in an instant messaging program designed to create phishing links to sites that looked similar to the original Internet resources Bla-Bla-Car and Avito. All this made it possible to illegally obtain payment details of citizens' bank cards, as well as their funds. Another detainee involved the direct perpetrators of thefts, who posted corresponding advertisements on the original Internet resource Bla-Bla-Car, communicated with citizens and sent them fake payment links. In addition, the scammers registered domain names of sites and carried out operations to transfer the stolen funds. Detectives of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the region established 34 criminal episodes. In total, more than 3,000 people could have suffered from such fraud. A joint investigation by the police and the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation is underway," Colonel Gorelykh noted.
