Cyberpolice of the Khmelnytsky region together with investigators of the Main Directorate of the National Police and employees of the SBU Department in the region under the procedural guidance of the Khmelnytsky Regional Prosecutor's Office stopped the activity of an online service that provided access to the websites of the aggressor country bypassing the sanctions restrictions of the National Security and Defense Council.
"Law enforcement officers identified a 28-year-old self-taught hacker from the city of Khmelnytsky, who shortly after the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation organized the illegal activity of a VPN service. The "startup" allowed access to more than 48 million IR addresses of the Russian segment of the Internet bypassing the sanctions of the National Security and Defense Council. According to the investigation, the daily volume of network traffic exceeded 100 gigabytes. To set up Internet traffic with the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and regions of the Russian Federation, the defendant equipped an autonomous server room in his apartment," - the police of the Khmelnytsky region reports.
In addition, the attacker rented servers located in Germany, France, the Netherlands and the Russian Federation. Thanks to this, the enemy's special services had the technical ability to access information about all users of the VPN service.
The man advertised his service in his own Telegram channels and thematic communities, as well as on a world-famous IT resource, where he positioned himself as a project developer and looked for like-minded people.
Police conducted searches at the places of residence of the attacker and his possible accomplices in Khmelnytskyi and Zhitomir. Server equipment, computer equipment, and mobile phones containing evidence of illegal activity were found and seized.
Now the police are analyzing an array of information from the seized gadgets to identify the defendant's accomplices and the sources of financing his "business". The version of the hacker's cooperation with Russian agents is being worked out.
Investigators announced suspicion to the defendant under Part 5 of Art. 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Unauthorized interference in the operation of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks, committed during martial law). He faces up to 15 years of imprisonment with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years.
Additional qualifications are possible based on the results of the investigation.
