According to police, Nuruhussein Hussein tracked down and put two victims in his car, one in March and the other in October. Hussein addressed the people waiting for the taxi by name. However, court documents do not indicate how Hussein knew the names of the victims who ordered the Uber taxi.
In one case, after the victim was in the cabin, Hussein complained that his phone was dead and asked the passenger for the device. Another time, in order to get someone else's phone, the criminal offered the victim to help troubleshoot the Uber app, which reported that their driver did not arrive.
Having obtained the passengers' phones, the man was able to transfer more than $223,000 worth of crypto assets from their accounts on the Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) exchange. When the victims asked Hussein to return their phones, the criminal used threats.
The prosecutor's office insists on remote supervision of the accused, and also demanded that he be banned from using the Internet. Given that Hussein was able to carry out a complex fraudulent scheme using electronic means of communication, law enforcement officers suggest that the man may destroy potential evidence of his guilt.
The prosecutor's office also demanded that Hussein be banned from leaving the Maricopa district, fearing his escape from the country - the accused often travels to Ethiopia. To be exempt, he must pay a bond of $200,000 in cash. Hussein's next appearance in court is scheduled for the end of December.
