TreeDoc is a tree structured editor. In a normal text editor you just start writing. In a tree editor you first create a node that has a label then you put text into the node. The nodes together create a document. After a document is created it can be exported as a normal text file. It can also be saved and used as a tree structured file.
Just as a regular editor is good for many tasks, a tree structured editor is good for many tasks. A tree editor makes a good PIM (personal information manager). The nodes allow you to organize information in a way that is easy to find things. A tree editor is a good way to organize a document. When writing a paper you write the outline and then fill in the details.
The main reason TreeDoc was written was to make it easier to produce a good help file for other programs. It is not as powerful as a Microsoft chm (compiled help) file or a group of html files but it is much easier to create. The help window is a special read only version of the editor. The help dialog "TreeHelpDlg" can be used in any C# program.
All the code for TreeDoc is in C#. It was written for C# 2005. It will probably compile and run under any newer version of C#. It was tested with SharpDevelop and nearly all of it could be saved as VB.net. TreeDoc is a portable program that can be run from any folder or a USB memory device. The TreeDoc file is a specially formatted text file. The formatting allows two TreeDoc files to be compared using Winmerge.
TreeDoc source is released under the MIT license by PineTreeJoe LLC.
