Introduction.
What are frames per second?
  • the frame rate is the frequency at which a device displays consecutive images
  • one image equals one frame
  • the more frames per second displayed, the smoother the animation
What is this guide about?
  • increasing the FPS to have a better gaming experience
  • keeping the FPS steady and the image nice
  • counteract to the injection of software and it's hit on performance
  • covering up all performance-giving possibilities
How does one read through this guide?
  • I do not promise a specific value regarding the increase of performance, there is no guarantee
  • tips are listed in no specific order besides the categories
  • I try to cover up the whole spectrum of possibilities, every tip may increase your performance differently
  • applying all tweaks may take about an hour or two (defragmentation excluded)
  • try things out carefully, I do not take any responsibility for anything you mess up
  • be critical, either with a tweak listed or with my english itself
Tweaking Windows.
Windows itself comes with a lot of features and visuals that you actually do not need. They may look great, you might save some euros concerning electricity costs with the default energy options, you might need the index to perform a faster search once in a while, but you should keep in mind that it decreases the performance of everything else. The key is to disable all the features you do not require.
options Location
Control Panel -> System and Security -> Power Options
Guide
Reason
Sometimes Windows messes up with the balancing between performance and energy. This tweaks some settings, for example setting the minimum processor state higher than default.
System Settings Location
Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Advanced System Settings
Guide
  • Go to the Tab "Remote". Uncheck "Allow RA connections to this computer", check "Don't allow connections" below.
  • Go to the Tab "Advanced". Open up "Performance Settings". Go to the first Tab. Check "Adjust for best performance" or go through the list by yourself.
  • Go to the Tab "Advanced".Open up "Performance Settings". The second Tab "Advanced" lets you change the Virtual Memory Windows is using. Click on Change, choose the drive and change the settings below. I use 1,5x of my RAM, some people don't use Virtual Memory at all, its a perfervid discussed topic, you gotta make your own decision here.
Reason
Remote Assistance can be very useful when you need it, but if you do not, disable it. The Performance Settings are not in need of clarification I guess.
Location
Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Homegroup
Guide
- Click on "Leave Homegroup".
- Go to "Change advanced sharing settings". Turn everything off except Network Discovery.
Reason
Unnecessary background Feature.
Bar / Start Menu / Sound Location
Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization
Guide
- Go to "Change Sound Effects" and select the Sound Scheme "No Sounds"
- Go to "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties". Uncheck "Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop" and go to the Start Menu Tab. Uncheck the 2 boxes below.
Reason
Unnecessary Feature, Saves RAM
unnecessary services Location
Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Guide
Now..this is a bit tricky. I don't know which Services you require and which you don't. Just google them and you will find out if you need them or not. You can always enable them again, so don't fear trying out to disable them. Just do not disable them without knowing their purpose, it can crash your Windows! Tip: Open up msconfig, go the the Tab "Services" and check "Hide all Microsoft Services". This will show you all custom services running, disable unnecessary ones.
[sIDE NOTE: DO YOU THINK I SHOULD ADD A SERVICE LIST?]
unused Windows features Location
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on or off
Guide
Simple: Uncheck everything you do not need! For example XPS, Media Features, Tablet, Games, Indexing Service. Keep in mind that you need Internet Explorer for a lots of other programs.
Reason
Unnecessary Features, Saves RAM
programs you never use Location
Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features or http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/iobit_uninstaller_4,2.html
Guide
I would personally recommend using IObits Uninstaller as it does not only uninstall the program, but also removes leftover files and registry keys.
Reason
Saves Space, probably turns off unnecessary processes
Widgets/Gadgets/Sidebars Location
Well...how am I supposed to know this?
Guide
Depends on the sidebars you have.
Reason
Saves RAM
Windows for corrupt files Location
CMD Window
Guide
- Type in chkdsk /f /r
- Type in sfc /scannow
Reason
Healthier hard drive for less errors.
the Context Menu Location
I recommend CCleaner for doing so.
Guide
- Go to Tools -> Startup -> Remove unnecessary entries
- You can also give it a try through regedit. https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/how-to-clean-up-your-messy-windows-context-menu/
Reason
Removing unused things is always a great thing, isn't it.
at your Task Manager Location
Right click on your Task Bar and click on 'Start Task Manager'.
Guide
Have a look at the services and processes, google them if necessary and find out if you can disable them.
Reason
Clearing up memory and cpu usage.
Updating software.
Keeping your software up to date is important to ensure the best support and quality of a product. Especially in the case of scripting the latest Framework becomes more important than to a regular user.
Important Hardware Important Software Other Options
  • Reinstall Windows
  • Reinstall League
  • Buy new hardware
  • Clean your hardware
  • Turn off Antivirus/Firewall or..
  • check for viruses, I recommend Malware Bytes or Spybot S&D
